VISAKHAPATNAM: With 10,603 new Covid-19 cases reported on Sunday, Andhra Pradesh surpassed Tamil Nadu to emerge as the second most affected state in India after Maharashtra. Health experts see the development as a cause for concern. Although AP has performed the highest number of tests per million inhabitants, its positivity rate is also increasing. The last lakh of cases was added in just 10 days. The only consolation for AP is that it is a distant second from Maharashtra with a case burden gap of more than three lakhs. While the number of cumulative cases in Andhra Pradesh was 4,24,767, neighboring Tamil Nadu has 4,22,085 confirmed infections as of Sunday night. Maharashtra leads the national count with approximately 7.64 lakh of cases.
The number of Covid-19 victims in Andhra Pradesh rose to 3,884 with 88 more deaths on Sunday. There are currently 99,129 active cases in Andhra Pradesh with 3,21,754 cumulative recoveries, which translates to a 76% recovery rate.
Andhra Pradesh surpassed the one lakh mark for cases on July 27, nearly 135 days after the state reported its first case on March 12. But it took the state only 11 days to add the following cases of one lakh to touch the two lakhs. milestone. The third lakh of cases also arrived in 11 days. But the state recorded the last one lakh cases in just 10 days to cross the four lakh mark on August 28.
On the other hand, Tamil Nadu reported its first case on March 7 and hit the milestone of one lakh of cases on July 3. But it took Tamil Nadu a relatively longer time of 55 days to reach four lakhs than the initial one-lakh cases. on August 27, against the AP, which took only 32 days for the last 3 lakh of cases.

AP remains at the top in testing for Covid-19

While Andhra Pradesh continued to rank first by conducting 67,478 Covid-19 tests per million inhabitants, Tamil Nadu ranked third among states with around 60,000 tests per million people.
Tamil Nadu recorded 7,231 Covid-related victims with a mortality rate of 1.71%, while Andhra Pradesh so far recorded 3,884 deaths with a mortality rate of 0.91%. Tamil Nadu outperforms AP with a recovery rate of over 85%. The AP is currently reporting around 10,000 cases per day compared to around 6,000 daily cases from Tamil Nadu.
Dr. C Prabhakara Reddy, Special Officer for the State Covid Control Center, told TOI that with Unlock 4.0 going into effect from September 1, the focus of the state health department would be to offer better treatment facilities for Covid-19 patients.
