Hyderabad:

A 20-year-old was beaten with sticks, abused and tonsured for allegedly stealing an iPhone from the home of filmmaker and Telugu participant Bigg Boss Nutan Naidu. Seven people, including the filmmaker’s wife, have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempted murder for the incident, police said.

CCTV footage accessed from the house shows the man sitting on the ground, while seven other people around him appear to be confronting the man. Then they beat him with sticks even when he falls at the feet of a woman who asks for mercy. Later he is tonsured by force.

The man, who belongs to the Programmed Caste community, later reported the matter to the police, after which a case was brought against seven people, including Priya Madhuri, Nutan Naidu’s wife. The defendants have been charged with attempted murder and also under the SC / ST Act.

The 20-year-old had worked at the filmmaker’s house from February until August 1. On August 27, he was summoned and charged with stealing Priya Madhuri’s iPhone, an accusation he denied. They called him back to the house the next day and detained him for hours together during which they beat him with sticks and rods and gave him a tonsure on his head. He was later fired with a warning not to report the incident.

Last month, two police officers acting on behalf of an MLA from the ruling state YSR Congress Party beat a Dalit man and shaved his head and mustache. The incident, labeled the “return of the Raj jungle” by opposition parties, has sparked protests and led to the suspension and arrest of the accused police officers: a deputy inspector and two officers.

Against the growing incidents of atrocities against the backward castes in the state, Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy had recently warned of strict action against anyone who commits inhuman, violent, abusive and illegal acts against the community. Even politicians or those from influential families will not be spared, Reddy had promised.
