Vetrival was 55 years old.
AMMK treasurer and former MLA P Vetrivel passed away due to COVID-19 at a private hospital in Chennai on Thursday. The 55-year-old leader was admitted to Sri Ramachandra Hospital on October 6 and his health condition became critical on October 9 and he was placed on a ventilator. According to a hospital statement, Vetrivel was under intensive care at Sri Ramachandra Hospital to receive treatment for COVID-19. The 55-year-old man died at 6:40 p.m. Thursday due to septicemia.
A close confidant of TTV Dhinakaran, Secretary General of the AMMK, Vetrivel began his political career in Congress before moving on to AIADMK. In 2011, he successfully competed from the position of RK Nagar Assembly. However, she vacated her seat in 2015 for AIADMK supreme Jayalalithaa, who had been disqualified as a judicial assistant and had to resign as chief minister following her conviction in 2014 by a lower court in the disproportionate assets case. Following his acquittal by the Karnataka High Court, Vetrivel withdrew from RK Nagar’s seat to make way for Jayalalithaa.
In 2016, Vetrivel received the AIADMK ticket to compete from the Perambur seat, which he later won. After the disappearance of Jayalalithaa and the subsequent division of AIADMK, he joined the TTV Dhinakaran faction and remained loyal to the end. He was disqualified along with 17 other MLA members from AIADMK for withdrawing support for Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami. In 2019, he competed under the Perambur AMMK, but was defeated.
AMMK supporters expressed their condolences on Twitter. One Twitter user, Arun, said: “You stand for what is right. You showed that loyalty is more than power. You could have lived to see TTV Dhinakaran Y AMMK reaching the lights. Rest in peace sir Vetrivel. ”
