NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah have written to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on the state’s failure to make arrangements for return of migrant laborers belonging to West Bengal who are currently stranded in various states due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
Shah in this letter to Mamata, pointed out that while migrants from West Bengal working in other states are anxious to return home and the Center and states where they are stranded, have made arrangements including trains to send them back, there has been no response from Mamata govt on receiving them.
The Central govt has so far facilitated more than 2 lakh migrants to reach home. The home minister told Mamata that migrants from West Bengal were also eager to reach home and Central government ready to facilitate their return by trains, but no expected support was forthcoming from the Mamata government. West Bengal is yet to allow the trains for their return. This, Shah is said to have noted, is injustice to West Bengal migrants and creates further hardship for them.
Shah requested Mamata government to cooperate with the Center in return of stranded laborers, as home ministry has been getting repeated requests from the states where they are stranded, to ensure that they reach their homes in West Bengal. Some of states where these migrant laborers are stuck are even facing unrest by them on account of the migrants’ frustration over not being able to reach home.
