Amit Shah at JP Nadda’s residence as BJP chiefs meet to discuss farmers’ protest

The BJP’s top brass met on Sunday evening at the residence of the party chairman, JP Nadda, on the subject of the farmers’ protest.

According to a person familiar with the events, the Union Interior Minister Amit Shah, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, and Defense Minister Rajnath Rajnath Singh are also present at the meeting.

The meeting comes a day after Shah reached out to the farmers and told them that the talks can be held before the scheduled December 3 date if the farmers move to the site in Burari that had been prepared for they.

On Sunday, Shah, who was campaigning for the party in Hyderabad, said the new laws are aimed at the welfare of farmers and that critics of the laws are politicizing the issue.

“I have never said that farmers’ protest is political and I would never say that,” he said while calling on farmers to stop their agitation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the new laws to improve the situation for farmers. In his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast, the prime minister said that new dimensions are being added to agriculture and its related activities in India and that agricultural reforms have opened new doors of possibilities for farmers. The prime minister praised the new legislation, saying the reforms have not only broken the shackles of farmers, but have also given them new rights and opportunities.
