In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the Karnataka government has now ordered medical stores and pharmacies to keep a record of the contact details of customers who buy certain drugs over the counter. Most of these medications include paracematols or those generally purchased for a cold, cough, and fever.
According to the recent state government order, the details of customers purchasing such medications must be shared with district health officials until the end of the Covid-19 outbreak.
The order from the state Department of Health and Family Welfare said that all chemists or pharmacists and pharmacies in hospitals must enter the details of the buyers, including their name, address, brand and mobile phone number who are provided with the following medications on the counter. Medications have been broadly categorized as related to the treatment of symptoms such as fever (antipyretic and anti-inflammatory), cold (antiallergic), and cough (antitussive). These drugs could be acetaminophen, including all strengths and doses, cetirizine or chlorpheniramine, and all kinds of cough syrups.
“Cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severely acute respiratory illness (SARI) that have similar symptoms like Covid-19 should be examined in the early stages so that morbidity and mortality from the virus can be stopped in community”. The added order.
The details of the buyer purchasing the above mentioned medications should be considered, either individually or in any combination. Records are subject to verification by district health officials or representatives.
“This is done to make it easy for officials to follow up on people with coronavirus-like symptoms. Buyer details should be provided to the district health officer on a daily basis. This order has been sent to all chemicals and pharmaceuticals and is effective immediately, “said Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Suresh Kumar, in charge of the Covid-19 briefings.
In addition to this, the government also ordered that all non-Covid-19 patients be treated at Ayushman Bharat-recognized alternative hospitals in the event that their primary hospital has become a specialized Covid-19 unit.
23 hospitals throughout the state have been converted to Covid-19 hospitals and these hospitals do not admit any non-Covid-19 case. With this, only 143 of 166 dialysis centers in the state are available. To address this shortage, 45 private hospitals have been identified to provide treatment to dialysis patients at the rate mentioned in the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
