Vijay Kumar Sinha was elected chairman of the Bihar assembly by majority vote on Wednesday, making him the first BJP lawmaker in the state to hold the post. He faced RJD MLA Awadh Bihari Choudhary, the opposition candidate Mahagathbandhan.
During the selection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, members of the Rashtriya Janata Party (RJD) created a scandal and opposed the selection by voice vote, citing the presence of members of the legislative council.
Showing the regulations to Protem president Jitan Ram Manjhi, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said that the rules must be followed during the president’s election. However, Manjhi said there will be no secret ballots in the House.
“In this very House, we have seen Lalu Yadav ji attend proceedings when he was a member of Lok Sabha and Rabri Devi ji was CM… There will be no secret ballots,” Manji said. He also added: “Those in the other House are not voting for the election of President. There is no problem in your presence. “
This is the first time that a BJP legislator has held the position of President in the Bihar Assembly. Since the 2005 elections, a member of JD (U) has always held the position of Spokesperson. While Uday Narayan Choudhary of the party was chairman for two terms (2005-2010 and 2010-2015), Vijay Kumar Choudhary was chairman between 2015 and 2020.
Although the names of BJP veterans Nand Kishore Yadav and Prem Kumar, both former government ministers, had been circulating, the top BJP leaders decided to maintain social balance in representing key positions and elected Sinha, a four-time Lakhisarai MLA of the upper caste Bhumihar community.
