Bombay:
Shiv Sena today criticized the BJP for describing the arrest of Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami in an incitement to the suicide case as a “black day” and an “attack on press freedom.”
An editorial in the Sena spokesman “Saamana” said it was surprising that the central ministers along with the state leaders of the BJP said that there was an “emergency-like situation” in Maharashtra due to Goswami’s arrest.
Goswami was arrested by police on Wednesday from his home in Mumbai for allegedly instigating the suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik.
Mr. Goswami and two others were charged with incitement to suicide and common intent in connection with the suicide of Mr. Naik and the latter’s mother for alleged non-payment of fees by Republic TV.
The “Saamana” editorial alleged that the previous state government “covered up” Naik’s suicide case to protect Goswami.
Furthermore, he claimed that a journalist was arrested in Gujarat for writing against the state government, while in Uttar Pradesh, journalists have been killed.
“No one felt that these incidents were reminders of the Emergency. Indeed, the BJP state leaders should demand justice for Anvay Naik, a son of the earth,” the editorial said.
“An innocent man committed suicide together with his elderly mother. The wife of the deceased is demanding justice and the police are following the law,” he said.
“Where is the issue of the fourth pillar (of democracy) being attacked? Those who say this are trying to trample on the first pillar,” the editorial said.
Everyone, including prime ministers, is equal before the law of the land, he said.
