Indian-American Vivek Murthy was named one of the three co-chairs of the COVID-19 Advisory Board that will guide President-elect Joe Biden in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic that has claimed more than 236,000 lives in the country.
Dr. Murthy, former US Surgeon General, along with two other co-chairs, would lead a team of prominent public health experts who will advise Biden, vice president-elect Kamala Harris on the deadly virus.
The United States is currently the nation most affected by the pandemic in the world.
“Coping with the coronavirus pandemic is one of the most important battles our administration will face, and science and experts will inform me,” Biden said.
New cases are increasing in at least 40 states, with more than 9.3 million total infections and more than 236,000 deaths, according to the press release.
“The advisory board will help shape my approach to managing the increase in reported infections; ensuring vaccines are safe, effective, and distributed efficiently, equitably, and free; and protecting populations at risk,” he said.
Dr. Beth Cameron and Dr. Rebecca Katz are serving as advisers for the COVID-19 Transition and will work closely with the Advisory Board, the Biden-Harris transition team said.
Kessler was a commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration from 1990 to 1997.
Murthy served as the 19th US Surgeon General from 2014 to 2017. Dr. Nunez-Smith is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Public Health, and Management at Yale University and Associate Dean for Equity Research at Health at Yale School of Medicine.
