Peasant leader Rakesh Tikait’s convoy was reportedly attacked in the Alwar district of Rajasthan on Friday, and Union leader Bharatiya Kisan (BKU) held the BJP responsible for the incident.
According to the police, four people, including the president of a local university student union, were detained in preventive custody for disturbing public order.
Tikait, who was in Rajasthan to address a kisan panchayat in Alwar’s Harsoli, shared a video on Twitter showing the damaged rear windshield of a car that was part of his convoy. Tikait supporters accused the BJP of shooting at the car and throwing ink at it.
“BJP thugs carried out a murderous attack at the Tatarpur crossing in Bansur, Alwar district. Images of the assassination of democracy, ”Tikait tweeted in Hindi along with the video.
Police said the incident took place on Friday afternoon as Tikait was going from one kisan panchayat to another.
“Tikait had two public meetings today in Alwar. After heading to a public meeting in Harsoli, Tikait was heading to the place of another meeting in Bansur. While on the way, some people under the leadership of Kuldip Rao, the president of the Raj Rishi Bharthari Matsya University student union, displayed black flags in the convoy, ”said Bhiwadi SP Ram Moorty Joshi.
He added that the protesters also threw ink at the convoy.
“The car in which Tikait was traveling had already gone ahead when the incident occurred. We have information that the protesters also threw ink on the cars. We also discovered that the glass in one of the cars in the Tikait convoy was broken. There was an altercation between supporters of Tikait and those who were displaying black flags. We have placed four people, including Rao, in protective custody for disturbing the peace, ”Joshi said.
He added that so far no complaints have been filed by farmers and no FIR has been filed in the incident.
Atul Agre, officer of the circle, Kishangarh Vas, said no evidence of shooting was found during the preliminary investigation.
BJP’s Alwar North President Balwan Yadav said he is not aware of the incident.
Meanwhile, reacting on the issue, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted: “The attack on the convoy of Union leader Bharatiya Kisan Rakesh Tikait ji in Alwar by the BJP people is reprehensible, action will be taken against the culprits. Since the beginning of the peasant protests, the BJP has been giving incessant declarations and behaving in an undemocratic way with those who fight for the rights of the peasants, which is shameful ”.
