The 19.87,705 cases recorded during August in India, according to TOI data collected from state governments, made it the worst virus outbreak in any country for a single month, higher than the number of reported infections in the US. In July (19, 04,462).
However, in terms of deaths, the United States and Brazil reported a higher death toll than India in August. The United States had recorded nearly 31,000 deaths as of August 30, while Brazil had recorded 29,565 deaths.
In India, the massive increase in infections during August can be measured by the fact that 54% of all registered cases since the outbreak of the pandemic occurred during the month. India’s total case burden is over 36.8 lakh. Of these, 28.3 lakh have recovered, while there are almost 7.9 lakh of active cases in the country. India’s number of active cases is second only to the United States, where the count is 25.6 lakh.

So far, the virus has claimed 65,373 lives in India, the third highest in the world after the United States (1.87 lakh) and Brazil (1.2 lakh).
On Monday, India recorded the lowest jump in cases in a week, with 65,968 new infections reported in the country. The day’s death toll, 824, was the lowest in a single day since Aug. 3. The decrease in new cases is consistent with the trend of fewer infections detected on Mondays due to the decrease in testing over the weekend and the slowdown in processing work due to the Sunday being a holiday.
Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are the three highest burden states currently leading the burden of Covid-19 cases in the country, accounting for 45.7% of new cases detected on Sunday.
The three states together also accounted for 50% of the deaths reported on Sunday and Maharashtra only accounted for almost 21% of the cases and more than 30% of the deaths recorded that day. The state has also been posting a high positivity rate of 20% or more.
Seven states accounted for 70% of the 78,512 cases registered in 24 hours, data from the Ministry of Health showed. Besides Maharashtra, the other states with a high number of cases were Andhra Pradesh (13.5%), Karnataka (11.2%), Tamil Nadu (8.2%), Uttar Pradesh (7.8%), Bengal Occidental (3.8%) and Odisha (3.8%).
