The Union Ministry of Health has revised the discharge rules for patients suffering from coronavirus infection. In accordance with the policy, patients infected with coronavirus who develop a serious illness will have to be negative through the RT-PCR test before being discharged from a hospital. Moderate cases of COVID-19 and mild and very mild pre-symptomatic cases do not need to be tested before being discharged after resolution of symptoms.

The health ministry shared a three-tier discharge policy with guidelines and instructions to follow before, during, and after discharge for patients with coronvirus.

Mild / very mild / pre-symptomatic cases

Mild / very mild / pre-symptomatic cases admitted to a COVID care center will undergo regular monitoring of temperature and pulse oximetry. The patient can be discharged after 10 days of symptoms and without fever for 3 days. There will be no need to test before discharge.

At discharge, the patient will be advised to follow the isolation at home for another 7 days.

At any time before discharge from the CCC, if the oxygen saturation falls below 95%, the patient is transferred to the dedicated COVID Health Center (DCHC).

After discharge from the center, if he / she develops symptoms of fever, cough, or shortness of breath again, they will contact the COVID Care Center or the state helpline or 1075. Their health will again be monitored by teleconference. on the 14th.

Moderate cases

1) Patients whose symptoms resolve in 3 days and maintain saturation above 95% for the next 4 days.

Cases clinically classified as “moderate cases” will undergo body temperature and oxygen saturation monitoring. If the fever resolves in 3 days and the patient maintains a saturation above 95% for the next 4 days (without oxygen support), the patient will be discharged after 10 days of symptom onset in case of:

  • Absence of fever without antipyretics.
  • Dyspnoea resolution
  • Does not require oxygen

There will be no need to test before discharge.

At discharge, the patient will be advised to follow the isolation at home for 7 days according to the guidelines available at

2) Oxygenation patient whose fever does not resolve in 3 days and the demand for oxygen therapy continues

Such patients will be discharged only after

  • resolution of clinical symptoms
  • ability to maintain oxygen saturation for 3 consecutive days

Serious cases, including immunocompromised (HIV patients, transplant recipients, malignancy)

Discharge criteria for severe cases will be based on

  • Clinical recovery
  • The patient tested negative once by RT-PCR (after resolution of symptoms)

The death toll from coronavirus rose to 1,981 and the number of cases rose to 59,662 today, according to the Union health ministry.
