Rahane’s tenacious 112, which according to head coach Ravi Shastri was the turning point of the game, became the cornerstone of India’s famous victory in the second round in Melbourne.
When asked what message he gave to Rahane before the tour, Amre said he simply told Mumbaikar’s partner to keep things simple.
“We don’t think about multiple tours at once. We try to be on that tour, (take) one tour at a time and try to do our best at it basically. And that’s what Ajinkya did,” said Amre, himself. a former player from India told PTI.
Amre, who made a hundred in his debut test in Durban, said Rahane should be given credit as he envisioned what he was going to face in Australia.
“This year (2020), above all, we have to give (Rahane) credit because most of the time as coaches we plan the sessions and practices; But this particular (time), in this difficult time of Covid, he planned his own sessions, he worked hard, basically harder than before, because he used to practice two sessions instead of one.
“But those are the things … little things he worked on, he visualized that this is going to be my preparation for this tough Australian. And any success cannot come like this, we know that preparation is important,” said Amre, who played 11 tests and 37 ODIs.
Rahane also received applause and praise for his captaincy in the second Test in the absence of Virat Kohli. Amre also praised him for leading the team from the front.
“That credit (from the captaincy) goes to Ajinkya just because as a coach we never work on things like the captaincy, we mainly work on the hitting side of the game.” When the opportunity to lead came, it’s all his credit. Handling the situation was not easy, but credit goes to him due to his calm nature as well. He is calm and collected and that is the reason why he was successful as captain, “he said.
“The little, little changes (he made), backing the youngsters, getting (Ravichandran) Ashwin in the first hour and wearing (Jasprit) Bumrah brilliantly.
“Because this is a test match, we have not allowed their tail to wag and we made sure that Bumrah and (other) bowlers were cool to play with, and we never allowed the match to drag, instead of that, we never allowed them to do that. ”
India struggled to level the series 1-1 after their humiliating loss at the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide when the team packed for 36, their lowest test score.
Amre rated Rahane’s blow well and said it helped the team regain its lost pride after the Adelaide debacle.
“Personally I rate it very high. Because it’s like sometimes you play for yourself to survive in the team, this is like the survival of Team India in Australia, because we wanted to win (restore) pride, what we lost in the first test. .
“Winning and losing is the second thing in cricket, it is part of the game. But the way we played the second test was very critical. This series is alive thanks to that (victory in the) second Test, that’s what we wanted as Cricket lover, cricket fan … we wanted to see India fight there and we are very happy. We not only (fought) but (also) got the result where we beat Australia on Australian soil, ”added Amre.
