An Air India crew member and a catering staff were arrested by customs officials for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold valued at approximately Rs 72.46 lakh into the country at Indira Gandhi International Airport, an official statement said Monday. .
The crew, who arrived on a flight from London on Sunday, after seeing that customs officials had hidden the gold in the plane’s overhead compartment, it said.
Subsequently, agents detained the staff of the catering company, M / s Ambassador Sky Chef, and “based on the discussion between the Air India crew and the catering company staff” recovered four gold ‘kadas’ coated with Silver color of the aircraft in the identification of the crew, said the statement issued by customs.
The total weight of the recovered gold is 1,667 kg, with a tariff value of Rs 72.47 lakh, it said.
The gold was seized and both defendants were arrested, according to the statement.
“Furthermore, the two persons mentioned above admitted their role in smuggling 1.5kg of gold on December 3, 2020 from London to India,” he said.
Thus, these two people were directly or indirectly involved in the smuggling of gold for a sum of 3.11 kg (1.5 kg on December 3 and 1,667 kg on Sunday), the statement added.
