The party’s executive committee is held at its headquarters in Chennai.
The AIADMK executive council approved 15 resolutions on Monday that were agreed by party leaders. These ranged from opposition to the current constitution of the ‘culture committee’ formed by the Center to reiteration of the government’s position on the two-language policy currently adopted by the state.
The executive meeting was held after a decision could not be reached regarding an ongoing power struggle between Prime Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and Senior Deputy Minister O Panneerselvam at a party meeting earlier this month. While the latter demanded that a steering committee be formed as promised in August 2017, the former was unwilling to meet a demand that could create too many centers of power within the party. However, the resolution was a show of unity from the executive committee, even as the discussion remained heated.
Among the important resolutions raised is the position of AIADMK on the policy of the three languages proposed by the Government of the Union.
The ruling party has stated very clearly that the mother tongue, Tamil and English, will be the main focus and will remain in the current dual language policy in the state.
AIADMK also noted that the state will insist that the center give the government the goods and services tax owed and provide funds for other major schemes.
And as the prime minister had insisted last week, the AIADMK has also questioned the ‘culture committee’ created by the Union’s Ministry of Culture.
The party has insisted that the committee include representatives from South India, especially from Tamil Nadu.
The government’s efforts to control the coronavirus pandemic were discussed and appreciated by the executive committee. The committee is currently chaired by the President of the Presidium, Madhusudhanan, the Senior Minister and the Senior Deputy Minister.
