The party also said it would demand that the Union government withdraw the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and Chief Deputy Minister O Panneerselvam disclosed that AIADMK published its manifesto for the Assembly elections in Chennai on Sunday. In announcing a list of populist schemes, the party announced free washing machines, solar stoves, 2GB data for students, free cable connection, and reduced fuel prices. Other key promises include waiver of the student loan, home delivery of rations and concrete houses for residents of the state. The party also promises a government job for each family that does not have a person employed in the government sector.
One of the biggest promises of the AIADMK poll is that the party would demand that the Union government abandon the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). When the bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha, 125 MPs voted in favor of the legislation and 99 against. AIADMK’s 11 votes were crucial to pass the bill in the Upper House. In the Lok Sabha, the only AIADMK MP, OP Raveendranath, son of MP CM OPS, voted in favor of the bill.
The manifesto focuses on students and women. Promises for students include giving 200ml of milk or powdered milk to school students, education will be put on the state list of concurrent list, noon meals will be extended for classes 9-12. In addition to this, the student loan and data 2GB exemption will be granted if the AIADMK is voted for power.
For women, AIADMK promises one year of maternity leave, concession of buses for women, six cylinders a year, 1500 rupees a month for female heads of household and free washing machine.
Given the expected split of votes from the Thevar community who used to vote heavily for AIADMK, the party has announced that it will take steps to rename the Madurai airport to Muthuramalinga Thevar, an icon and patriarch of the community.
