After Laser Guided Anti-Tank Missile, India Successfully Tests New Version of Shaurya Missile | India News

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing border dispute with China, India successfully tested a new version of the nuclear-capable Shaurya missile off the coast of Odisha on Saturday (October 3, 2020).

The new version of the missile will be incorporated into the strategic forces to complement one of the existing missiles in the same class, important government sources told ANI.

The missile would be lighter and easier to operate compared to the existing missile and can strike targets at around 800 km. In the last phase, as it approaches its target, the missile moves at hypersonic speeds.

This comes just days after India successfully tested a locally developed laser-guided anti-tank guided missile at Ahmednagar in Maharashtra on Tuesday. It was the second successful test of this type of missile launch in the last 10 days. The missile has a range of up to 5 km.

The missile was fired from an MBT Arjun tank in the KK Ranges at Armored Corps Center and School (ACC&S) in Ahmednagar.

“The ATGM employs a tandem thermal warhead to defeat armored vehicles protected with explosive reactive armor (ERA) at ranges of 1.5 to 5 km,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Recently, India also successfully tested the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile which can hit targets at more than 400 km range, which is at least more than 100 km of the missile’s previous capability.

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has been working to complete full self-reliance in the field of strategic missiles and has further enhanced its efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s so-called Aatmanirbhar Bharat earlier this year.
