Mumbai:
Security was increased at the home of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan a day after she spoke emphatically in parliament against what she called attempts to vilify the film industry with drug abuse allegations related to the investigation into Sushant Singh’s death. Rajput. Mumbai police have provided additional security outside Jalsa, the Bachchans’ iconic Juhu bungalow. Police called it a precautionary measure amid Jaya Bachchan’s vicious trolls on social media after his speech.
Attacking actor and BJP MP Ravi Kishan for his comments on drugs in Bollywood, Jaya Bachchan, a member of the Samajwadi Party, said in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday: “Just by a few people, you cannot tarnish the entire industry … Jis thaali me khaate hain usi me chched karte hain, “he said.
Even when 72-year-old Jaya Bachchan received tremendous support from many in Bollywood after her fiery speech, a large chunk of social media users criticized her statements, with hashtags like #ShameOnJayaBachchan trending on Twitter.
Actress Kangana Ranaut also criticized the veteran actor, asking if Ms. Bachchan would react in the same way if her daughter or son were affected.
Today, the 33-year-old actor attacked Jaya Bachchan once again in a Hindi post: “What dish does Jaya-Hee and your given industry? … I taught feminism to this industry, I decorated the plate with patriotic and feminist films. This is my plate, Jaya-Hee, It is not yours.”
But across the political divide, Bachchan’s remarks were backed by veteran actor and BJP MP Hema Malini, who said Bollywood “will always remain in high regard” and no one could topple him in an instant over charges such as drugs and nepotism. In an emotional defense of the film industry, he told NDTV: “I have a name, fame, respect, everything in this industry … it feels really painful.”
Security for the Bachchans in Mumbai was interpreted by many as the Maharashtra government’s response to the center’s move to provide Y-plus security to Kangana Ranaut in its confrontation with Shiv Sena over his comments on Mumbai.
The Shiv Sena accused his ally turned bitter rival BJP of supporting Kangana Ranaut in a game of political overcoming.
