New Delhi: A rare fast-growing deadly fungal disease, triggered primarily in patients who have recovered from COVID-19, has emerged in New Delhi. In the last 10 days, Gangaram Hospital witnessed 10 patients with mucormycosis, of which there were 5 fatal patients, with loss of vision, removal of nose and jaws.

Black fungus or mucormycosis has long been the cause of illness and death in transplants, ICUs, and immunocompromised individuals. However, it is the rapid increase in the number seen in recovering COVID-19 patients that is cause for alarm.

The deadly yeast infection could be prevented if doctors treating COVID-19 patients are aware of the amount of steroids that are given as immunity suppressants to alleviate respiratory problems.

Among the symptoms, persistent nose infection, dry and stuffy nose and crusting, numb cheeks, red eyes, loosening of teeth due to weakening of the jaws are immediate causes that require medical attention. .

The elderly, diabetics and those with low immunity are the most likely to get yeast infection. It is contagious by contact and touch of contaminated surfaces and objects infected with mold. Following a hygienic lifestyle, washing hands, and sanitizing surfaces can help as a precaution.
