NEW DELHI / SRINAGAR: High-speed 4G internet services were restored across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday in view of the “general security situation” in the Union Territory, nearly a year and a half after they were interrupted due to to the concerns that arose. of the annulment of article 370.
Internet services at J&K were shut down on August 5, 2019 and subsequently restored to 2G speed. 4G services were resumed in two districts, Ganderbal and Udhampur, in August last year on a trial basis, while the other 18 districts continued to work with 2G with the now biweekly orders extending the 4G ban due to security concerns.
Government sources drew attention to the order from the Jammu and Kashmir Department of the Interior, which cited the “council of the special committee (constituted by the advice of the Supreme Court)” and “a careful review of the general security scenario” to “revoke the restrictions on mobile devices data services and landline internet connectivity … except to the extent that prepaid SIM card holders are provided access to internet connectivity only after verification according to applicable regulations for postpaid connections. ”
The order was issued after the special committee took note of the inputs and arrests of the security agencies, as well as the evaluation of the openness of high-speed mobile Internet connectivity in Ganderbal and Udhampur.
Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha, who since taking over the Union Territory in August last year had ensured that the special committee reviewed the ban consistently, put his stamp of approval to restore 4G services.
