What is the Keto diet and can it affect the kidneys?

For those who haven’t, the ketogenic diet (ketogenic diet) is a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carbohydrate diet that is designed to help you lose weight by achieving ketosis. If you follow the rule book, an ideal ketogenic diet should consist of about 75 percent fat, 20 percent protein, and only 5 percent carbohydrates per day. The fundamental principle behind this diet is to eliminate all sources of carbohydrates (which our body uses for fuel) and instead use fat as a source of energy for the body. This process is known as ketosis and generally occurs within 3-4 days of following the keto diet.

While the high-fat diet is touted as having several health benefits and has many stakeholders, several studies have also linked it to adverse effects on the body, especially if it is followed for a long time. This diet can put a lot of stress on your kidneys and can lead to kidney stones. Even though the ketogenic diet is a high-fat (and not high-protein) diet, moderate increases in protein also need to be carefully monitored, especially in those who already have chronic kidney disease or any other type of kidney disease.
The bottom line

According to several studies, kidney stones are still one of the possible side effects of the ketogenic diet. Therefore, not only is it important to drink plenty of water to reduce stress on your kidneys when following this diet, but it is wise to speak with your healthcare provider for supplements that can reduce your risk of developing kidney stones. People with kidney disease should always consult their doctor and dietitian before making any drastic changes to their diet. Their diet is typically low in protein, and following the ketogenic diet can overload your kidneys.
