Actor Payal Ghosh has joined the Republican Party of India (A) led by Union Minister Ramdas Athawale in Mumbai and has been appointed vice chairman of its women’s wing, according to the ANI news agency on Monday. Ghosh had recently accused Anurag Kashyap of rape, a charge denied by the filmmaker.
The actor had filed a rape case against Kashyap in September and met with the Governor of Maharashtra, BS Koshyari, to demand action against the filmmaker. She was accompanied by Athawale, a member of Rajya Sabha. The two had also met with Mumbai Police Deputy Commissioner (Law and Order) Vishwas Nangare Patil, seeking safety for the actor.
Mumbai police had booked Kashyap after the actor accused him of sexual misconduct. The First Informational Report (FIR) was registered at the Versova police station on September 22 after the actress, along with her lawyer Nitin Satpute, approached the police. The FIR was registered under Sections 376 (I) (rape), 354 (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with the intent to violate her modesty), 341 (undue restraint) and 342 (undue confinement) of the India (CPI).
In her police report, Payal Ghosh alleged that Kashyap raped her at a location on Yari Road in Versova in 2013.
