Activist Writes From Jail: Humanity Bubbling Here | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Jesuit priest and tribal rights activist Stan Swamy (83), arrested in the Elgar Parishad case, has written a letter to his colleagues, describing his days in jail and said that “despite all the forecasts, humanity is bubbling in the prison of Taloja.” Swamy suffers from Parkinson’s disease and the letter was written with the help of her co-defendant and fellow inmate, Arun Ferreira. An excerpt from the letter was posted on the Facebook page of human rights activist John Dayal.
“Arun helps me eat breakfast and lunch. Vernon helps me bathe. My two inmates help me at dinner, wash my clothes and massage my knees. They are from very poor families. Please remember my inmates and colleagues in your prayers, ”the letter read.
He wrote that he was housed in a cell about 13 by 8 feet, along with two other inmates. “It has a small bathroom and a toilet with an Indian toilet. Fortunately, they gave me a chair with a western toilet, ”the letter said.
Swamy said that the co-defendants, Varavara Rao (80), Vernon Gonsalves and Ferreira were in another cell.
Stan: Thankful for the support and solidarity.
During the day, when the cells and barracks are opened, we meet. From 5.30 to 06.00 and from 12.00 to 15.00, I am locked in my cell, with two inmates (sic), ”Swamy wrote.
Swamy also expressed appreciation for the solidarity and support provided by those to whom he addressed the letter.
On November 6, Swamy’s defense moved to the NIA special court in search of her straw and sip, as her hands are unstable due to Parkinson’s disease. The court ordered the prosecution to file a response on November 26.
