Kerala and Karnataka reported more than 10,000 new cases of coronavirus infection on Wednesday, both hitting new records in the process, but the national tally remained within 80,000. Karnataka has also reported more than 10,000 cases on three previous occasions, but Kerala, which is in the midst of a large increase over the past three weeks, has exceeded that number. for the first time.
As of early September, the maximum number of cases Kerala had reported in a single day was about 2,500. But there has been a huge increase after that, and in the last three weeks, the average number of new cases each day has approached 7,000.
The positivity rate, or the number of people who tested positive among those who were tested, has steadily increased. It was around 4.5 percent in early September and has now surpassed 7.5 percent. It means that more positives are being reported from the same number of tests and indicates that the infection has spread rapidly in the population.
Earlier this month, the Kerala government had issued prohibitive orders across the state, banning the gathering of more than five people until the end of this month. On Wednesday, the government decided that only 250 pilgrims could visit the Sabarimala shrine per day when it opens on October 16 for a five-day festival. Two more ministers in the state government also tested positive. So far, five ministers have been found infected.
There has also been a small increase in the number of deaths reported by the state. For more than two weeks, the death count has been over 20 every day. Kerala still has a comparatively low fatality rate of 0.37%, and it is declining because cases are increasing much faster. So far, the state has recorded 940 coronavirus-related deaths, including those it has determined died due to comorbid conditions.
With more than 92,000 active cases, Kerala now has the third highest number of active cases in the country, after Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Karnataka is also experiencing rapid case growth, although not as fast as Kerala. The state’s number of cases has surpassed that of Tamil Nadu and now has the highest number of people after Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh who have ever been infected with the disease. Its current growth rate is around 1.5 percent per day, less than half that of Kerala, which is growing at around 3.75 percent per day.
But Karnataka has recorded many more deaths, more than 9,500, which is next to Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Its fatality rate is more than 1.4%.
Nationwide, the number of new cases, some 78,000, on Wednesday remained substantially below the number of recoveries, a trend that has been witnessing over the past three weeks. The new daily case detection has not touched the 90,000 mark for 18 days. During this time, there has been a reduction of more than one lakh in the number of active cases in the country, around 20 percent of which has been contributed by the deaths that occurred, while the rest is the result of the fact that more people are recovering from the disease than are infected.
