Iqbal Ansari, who was one of the litigants in the lawsuit for Ayodhya’s title in the Supreme Court, appealed on Thursday to the IWC special court to acquit the 32 defendants in the Babri Masjid demolition case for the sake of Hindu-Muslim unity.
The IWC special court in Lucknow will render its verdict in the Babri demolition case on September 30, in which veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Kalyan Singh and Uma Bharti, among others are the accused.
“The Supreme Court has resolved the Ayodhya dispute. Now both the Ram temple and the mosque are being built in Ayodhya (in separate places). Several defendants in the case (Babri demolition) have died. In my personal opinion, the IWC court must acquit the 32 defendants to end the dispute and pave the way for Hindu-Muslim unity, ”Ansari said.
On November 9 last year, the supreme court paved the way for the construction of the Ram temple on what was until then known as the disputed site. The court also ordered the government to allocate land for the construction of a mosque elsewhere in Ayodhya.
“When the Supreme Court has resolved the dispute (claim for Ayodhya’s title), the CBI (Lucknow) court must also end the dispute and acquit all defendants in the general interest of the nation,” he added Ansari.
The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust had invited three Muslims to the Ram bhoomi pujan temple on August 5: Iqbal Ansari, Mohammad Sharif, both from Ayodhya, and the Chairman of the Sunni Central Waqf Board of Uttar Pradesh, Zufar Ahmed Farooqui from Lucknow. But only Ansari attended the ceremony.
Ansari also opposed the decision of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board to file a petition for review in the Supreme Court against the Ayodhya verdict of the high court. The Supreme Court dismissed all requests for review in December of last year.
