Mumbai:
BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said the decision of the Maharashtra government led by Shiv Sena to relocate the subway car shed project from the city’s lung in Aarey colony to Kanjurmarg in Mumbai was “unfortunate”.
The former prime minister also said that this decision was made just to satisfy someone’s ego, which will increase the cost of the project by at least 4 billion rupees.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced the scrapping of the Aarey subway car shed and said that the project will now be moved to government land in the suburbs of Kanjurmarg and that no cost will be incurred for such end.
“Unfortunate decision to move Metro Car Shed from Aarey to Kanjurmarg and that too just to satisfy the ego. This decision will increase the cost of the project by at least Rs 4,000 crore and this cost escalation is evaluated by the committee appointed by this Government”, tweeted Mr. Fadnavis during whose tenure work began on the car shed.
“Why such a big burden just to satisfy someone’s ego? Who does the government want to suffer and why?” He asked.
Before the 2019 Assembly elections, former BJP ally Shiv Sena had opposed the project on the grounds that it would harm the environment in the city’s prominent green colony.
Devendra Fadnavis tweeted that the Kanjurmarg site was previously considered by her government, but was in dispute and was suspended by the high court.
“Some individuals claimed their rights. The suspension was requested to be lifted. The High Court wanted the amount deposited if the claims were resolved in the future. This amount was around Rs 2.4 billion in 2015. What is the status of that case? today? And if someone moves the Supreme Court, who will be responsible for the delay? “asked the leader of the opposition in the Legislative Assembly.
Fadnavis further said that since the site at Kanjurmarg is a swampy land, it will take at least two years to stabilize it.
“In addition to this, all previous tenders will have to be scrapped and a new process will have to be followed. No DPR or feasibility report has been made for this site. This means that the Metro project, which would have been in Mumbaikars service on Next year, it has now been postponed indefinitely. Rs 400 crore has already been spent for Aarey CarShed, Rs 1,300 crore wasted due to project suspension and escalation of additional costs of Rs 4,000 crore? “he asked in another tweet.
Devendra Fadnavis questioned the government’s “motive” behind “blocking the smooth travel of Mumbaikars” and claimed that the government of Maha Vikas Aghadi is misleading Mumbaikars.
