New Delhi:
Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will visit the Delhi-Haryana border today to review arrangements made for farmers protesting and camping there, authorities said.
Kejriwal will visit the Singhu border along with his cabinet members around 10 am, they said.
Party leader Aam Aadmi will be the first chief minister of a state to visit a protest site. Mr. Kejriwal is among several opposition leaders who have extended their support for “Bharat bandh”, which has been called upon by the thousands of farmers protesting against the center’s controversial new farm laws.
“The Aam Aadmi Party fully supports the Bharat bandh call made by farmers on December 8th. AAP workers across the country will support you peacefully. There is a call to all compatriots to all support the farmers and participate in it, “Kejriwal tweeted.
Peaceful protests are taking place on the Singhu and Tikri borders, where farmers had been gathering from Punjab and Haryana for more than 10 days. The number of farmers on the Ghazipur border increased, with more joining from Uttar Pradesh.
Farmers protesting the center’s new farm laws agreed to a sixth round of talks, scheduled for Wednesday, after the latest meeting yielded no progress on the central issue: the repeal of three laws that critics have called ” black “and” anti-farmers.
Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, who was part of the center’s negotiating team, told farmers that the government needed more time for internal discussions and said a new proposal would be tabled at next week’s meeting. .
The new laws, aimed at cutting off middlemen and allowing farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country, have deeply upset farmers. Farmers say it will only result in the phasing out of traditional mandis and the guaranteed minimum price paid by the government, leaving them at the mercy of companies.
