Ahmedabad: Some residents frustrated by a strict coronavirus lockup in Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat, threw stones and encountered tear gas in clashes with paramilitary forces on Friday.
City authorities ordered all stores, except those that sold milk and medicine, to close from midnight Wednesday to May 15, implementing a stricter than national blockade established since March 25, in an effort to curb the increase in infections.
Clashes broke out in Ahmedabad, Shahpur, when police and paramilitary forces attempted to force the closure, asking people to stay inside. “Some people were agitated and started throwing stones at the forces,” said City Police Commissioner Ashish Bhatia. Reuters “The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. The situation is under control now, ”he said.
Local television channels showed crowds chasing the police and paramilitary teams. Bhatia said a police officer was injured and eight people were detained.
Ahmedabad is one of the worst affected cities in India. The city has reported more than 5,000 cases of coronavirus, which represents approximately 70 percent of the total cases in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state. The city has also accounted for more than three-quarters of the deaths in Gujarat.
Overall, India has reported 56,342 cases, of which at least 1,886 people have died.
