“A gentle soul and an abundant talent,” Amitabh Bachchan wrote in a poignant message for celebrated Bengal actor Soumitra Chatterjee on Sunday. Soumitra Chatterjee, 85, died Sunday afternoon in Kolkata. Paying tribute to the iconic actor of Bengali cinema, Amitabh Bachchan shared a photo of himself and the late actor and described him as “one of the most powerful pillars of the film industry.” He tweeted: “Soumitra Chatterjee … an iconic legend … one of the most powerful pillars in the film industry, has fallen … a gentle soul and abundant talent … I last met him at IFFI in Kolkata … prayers. ” On his blog, Big B wrote: “Soumitra Chatterjee … a prolific giant and icon … a legend of the Bengal film industry … passes away … just prayers for the deceased soul and a helpless … him I last met at IFFI in Kolkata … a kind, humble and gracious human. “

The last rites of Soumitra Chatterjee were carried out at the Keoratala Crematorium in Kolkata on Sunday night with all the honors of the police. The funeral was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, as well as various celebrities from Bengali cinema and hundreds of fans.
The actor was admitted to the Belle Vue Clinic on October 6 with COVID-19. He recovered from the virus in a few days, but his health deteriorated as the days passed. Shortly after he tested negative for the virus, he was put on life support and on Saturday he stopped responding to any of the treatments. “Soumitra Chatterjee is unresponsive to treatment. Even miracles can fall short in this situation,” said a doctor treating him at the Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata on Saturday.
Following Soumitra Chatterjee’s death, an official statement was issued that read, “We declare with regret that Shri Soumitra Chattopadhyay breathed her last at 12-15pm at the Belle Vue Clinic today (November 15, 2020). We render our homage to his soul. “
Soumitra Chatterjee was best known for playing the roles of Apu in Apur Sansar and Feluda in Sonar Kella Y Joy Baba Felunath, all three led by Satyajit Ray. He collaborated with Satyajit Ray 14 times. Some of his films are Charulata, Devi, Teen Kanya, Ghare Baire, Y Ganashatru.
