HYDERABAD: In another tragic incident highlighting the miseries of migrant workers during the coronavirus-induced confinement, a 12-year-old girl who worked in the Telangana fields of Chile died after walking for three days to reach her home in Chhattisgarh.
Jamla Makhdam, who had started walking along with 10 other people on April 15, collapsed and died when she was only an hour from her home in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh.
The group had walked almost 150 km from Kannayaguda village in Jayashankar Bhupalapally district.
The incident came to light on Tuesday when Balala Hakkula Sangham, an NGO fighting for children’s rights, filed a petition with the Telangana State Human Rights Commission seeking an investigation into the incident.
According to the NGO, the girl, along with her family, worked on a chili farm in Kannayguda of Eturu Nagaram Mandal in the Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.
Achyuta Rao, chairman, Balala Hakkula Sangham, told IANS that they asked the commission to order the district collector to respond how a 12-year-old boy was employed on a farm and how the district’s admission allowed them to cross the district border. in this lock
“We also ask the commission to order the district collector of the Bhupalpally district to take action against officials for their negligence regarding the girl’s safety, which ultimately led to her death,” he said.
The NGO also requested instructions from the government to pay compensation to the family of the deceased.
