The BCCI has made it clear that test cricket remains paramount to Indian cricket with respect to the interrupted Test World Championship, even when options for a delayed T20 World Cup were discussed during the ICC Chief Executives Committee meeting Thursday.
The Coronavirus outbreak has halted cricket activities, like any other sport. The ICC is in the process of formulating contingency plans and a future course of action when cricket finally resumes.
The World Test Championships and the inaugural ODI League were the top two items on the agenda during the meeting, but organizing the T20 World Cup is the first important task for the ICC and Cricket Australia.
Up to eight options for the T20 World Cup were on the table during the meeting, which was attended by 12 members of the ICC and three associate members. Most Member Boards seem to have focused on three possible options when it comes to scheduling the T20 World Cup.
“Although it is a bit early, three options have been selected. The first is to stick to the original calendar from October to November and the second to the tournament in February-March of next year. The third and last option that he focused on is organizing the tournament in 2022, “one of the representatives, who was part of the meeting, told India Today.
“Most likely they (the ICC and the member Boards) will move towards holding the T20 World Cup in February-March,” the source added.
The postponement of the T20 World Cup opens a window for the IPL, which was scheduled to start from March 29, but has been suspended due to the Coronavirus. Once the impact of the Coronavirus reduces the possibility of organizing the IPL in September-October, it also improves and the tournament can provide a preparatory ground for the T20 World Cup.
“Regarding the World Test Championship, the BCCI has maintained the importance of the World Test Championship and it is unlikely that the points will be shared. The Test schedules will be altered and, in all probability, the final, which was scheduled in June 2021., it will move to 2022, “the source added.
No final decision was made at the meeting and the ICC will continue to review the situation, but it is becoming increasingly clear that the T20 World Cup can be moved to February-March 2021.
Members and the ICC also emphasized obtaining an expert opinion from the ICC Medical Committee on how long it may take for the Covid-19 outbreak to disappear, in addition to resuming cricket with or without crowds.
