Remember the fully electric. Chevrolet eCOPO Camaro? Yes, Ford has something that rivals it. On Thursday, the Blue Oval revealed the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, which marks the first time Ford Performance has tackled a purely electric dragster.

Let’s go straight to the good, shall we? As the name implies, there are 1,400 horsepower available and over 1,100 foot-pounds of torque ready for riders to return to their seats instantly. As the eCOPO CamaroIt’s pretty wild to see how the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 does nothing but a quiet buzz as the drag strip accelerates. But it is fast, without a doubt.

Ford Performance believes the electric dragster will record a quarter mile in the low eight-second range with a speed of around 170 mph. The team believes the car is just a way to show what’s possible with a zero-emission powertrain, especially as the automaker prepares to launch the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV.

The finer details have yet to be worked out, and the automaker plans to test the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 for a few more months, with a handful of partners on board to supply things like the engine, software, and more. Later this year, the company plans to showcase the dragster at a race event to be determined where we hope to see the electric machine strut in person.
