Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik recalled the first IPL auction when he expected to be chosen by Chennai Super Kings, his home state franchise.
Recently in interaction with Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik said he was surprised when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) chose MS Dhoni over him in the inaugural IPL season.
“The first name I saw chosen (by CSK at the first IPL auction) was MS Dhoni, for 1.5 million. He was sitting around my corner. He didn’t even say a word to me that he was going to be chosen by CSK I guess I didn’t know, but that was the biggest dagger for my heart, “said Dinesh Karthik.
Notably, Karthik has represented six IPL franchises, but the wicketkeeper-batsman has yet to play for the team since his hometown. Karthik has been Tamil Nadu’s star cricket player for the past decade, but unlike his state teammates Murali Vijay and Ravichandran Ashwin, he was never lucky enough to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
“So I thought they were going to pick me up later. But 13 years have passed and I’m still waiting for the elusive call from CSK,” added Karthik.
The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer has been in and out of the Indian senior team throughout his career, having played the second violin at MS Dhoni for most of his career.
The first IPL franchise Karthik played for was Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), having been cordoned off during the inaugural edition in 2008. Since then she has played for Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Lions, Kolkata Knight Riders.
