NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Railways offered to supply 2.6 lakh of meals daily at Rs 15 each from rail kitchens across the country where the district administration can collect cooked meals to distribute to those in need.
The national carrier said it has already informed district authorities and details of the zoned kitchen charges have also been communicated to the states. The ministry said that settlement of payments may be done by state governments later.
IRCTC, the rail reservation and catering reservation subsidiary, has kitchens spread across the country.
“The 2.6 lakh per day meal offer is based on the cooking capacities of the assigned locations. If the need arises, more such locations can be increased to increase supply, ”said an official statement.
Railways have been distributing free hot meals to those in need during the national shutdown and by Tuesday this crossed the 20 lakh mark.
“This is being done with the cooperation of the IRCTC base kitchens distributed in various areas. Food distribution is carried out with the help of RPF, GRP, commercial departments of different areas, state governments, district administrations and NGOs, even beyond the vicinity of the station to meet the food needs of people in need in the areas surrounding railway stations, “said the official statement.
