Extraction Movie Review: Extraction is the work of two men, in equal parts Chris Hemsworth and Randeep Hooda

“Tumi toh pola paan,” says a menacing Amir Asif (Priyanshu Painyuli), patting a boy’s cheek (Suraj Rikame as Farhad), all 16. This was right after he ordered the same boy to cut two fingers. as compensation for your lost shipment. A group of terrified children and a pair of Amir puppets watch. Welcome to dhaka.

The extraction of Sam Hargrave (based on the graphic novel City of Ande Parks), a Netflix original, stands – runs and fights – on three legs: Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, Randeep Hooda as Saju and Priyanshu as Aamir. There is an incredible amount of action, bullets were fired, cars and helicopters exploded, and the bodies piled up like dead flies. And as a master puppeteer, Sam maintains strong control over everything.

The trailer tells you about a few things. Tyler is a black market mercenary hired to extract a kidnapped son of a Mumbai drug dealer (Pankaj Tripathi as Ovi Mahajan senior) (Rudhraksh Jaiswal as Ovi Mahajan) from Amir’s cellars. Saju is ambiguous, you’re not sure which side of the battle he is on. About 30 minutes after the movie, you realize that the trailer was exactly what it was supposed to be: a trailer. The movie is quite different.

Check out the Extraction trailer here:

Yes, there is action. But Tyler is not Thor. He is strong but he falls and bleeds, he loses his breath, he needs Ovi’s help to bandage his wounds. He fights like a human, not a god, and although he is resilient, you see flashes of fear and vulnerability on his face. Saju is no different. He looks at his broken and now blackened nose in the mirror, replaces it in a clean sweep, and screams in excruciating pain. Both powerful warriors were recovering in their respective hiding places, after the 11-minute melee scene that now turned out to be Extraction’s USP.

The combat scene is a dance duet. It is technically sound and shows the two-week preparation that was done. The camera shake is uneven, allowing the audience to follow the movement of Tyler and Saju instead of giving them a gallery view, making it much more shocking.

Unlike Avengers, and the only reason we’re even dropping this name is because Sam is credited as the action director at most, while Extraction is written by Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo. they. Chris Hemsworth’s greatness is juxtaposed with the smallness of Priyanshu Painyuli. However, there is no doubt that this princely-looking guy with an impeccable fashion sense – stripping off a light yellow suit and an embroidered Sherwani in the same style – is the lord of Dhaka. And when he says “Dhaka bondho kore dao (closes Dhaka)”, you believe him. We can also add that there is a certain something about a garish Bengali villain. Although Priyanshu doesn’t always fully understand Bangal’s touch of Bangla, Brownie points to his efforts.

It is interesting to note here that Amir and Tyler never meet face to face, despite being at war with each other.

There is very little of Golshifteh Farahani like Nik Khan, Tyler’s contractor who finds her such strange jobs, but she is effective. David Harbor as Gasper, a former mercenary and Tyler’s only friend in Dhaka who helps him with food and shelter one night has an important purpose: to remind us that you can do this only until you are young. Old age breaks your back. But Pankaj Tripathi has been given only one scene. He is in prison but, more importantly, he has lost his wicked dominance. Now, he is a desperate man who wants his son at home, not because he loves him but because izzat ka sawaal hai.

A common thread that ties each character in Extraction is a delicate father-son relationship: Tyler and his son who died at four of lymphosarcoma; Saju and his son, whom he is trying to protect so that he does not become a pawn in a mafia war, Ovi Mahajan, senior and junior, who are practically strangers to each other, and even Amir, who sees a kind of successor in Farhad.

Thanks to Sam and Joe here for such nuanced characterization.

The extraction is 116 minutes of pure action, interspersed with flashbacks of gladiators with blurred faces of loved ones (in Tyler’s case). When one’s physical and psychological strength is tested at such extremes in a fight, such smooth overlapping scenes only enhance the brutality and hence the impact on the mind of the audience. So it’s only natural that Sam chose this type of script style. However, in some parts, this carefully chosen trope slows down the narration a bit, while in others it makes Tyler and Saju seem more crybaby than human.

It should be added here that, perhaps it is the first time that we come across an American film that does justice to Indian talent by giving them developed roles and not reducing them to stereotypes. Priyanshu Painyuli is an evil, Randeep Hooda is a true fighter and Rudhraksh Jaiswal, although he sometimes leans towards the hapless Indian boy that we have seen too often in Slumdog Millionaire and Life Of Pi, it makes his heart bleed.

The music at Extraction is interesting. The background score (by Alex Belcher and Henry Jackman) increases tension, exactly as it should, and the intermittent use of Bangladeshi rap – Cypher Bangla 2K16 is now on our playlist – gives you the illusion of calm, only to later hit you with a wham! There’s a third element, Bollywood music from the ’90s, that echoes from the windows and dingy rooms as Tyler with Ovi crawls through the Dhaka chawls.

Sam Checkout is intended for viewing theater in digital Dolby. We recommend that you connect your headphones to this one.
