Chennai Tamil Nadu Prime Minister K Palaniswami said on Tuesday that a greater number of tests led to a higher number of Covid-19 cases in the state, claiming that the high population density, narrow lanes and the use of toilets Publics made Chennai a challenge in cluster containment. Palaniswami had been under pressure recently amid mounting concerns of conglomerate outbreaks in the southern state’s capital metropolis after Chennai recorded a steady increase in positive cases for the past week.
The prime minister held a high-level meeting to review efforts to contain the virus in the city, especially in areas like Royapuram, Anna Nagar, Thiru. Saw. Ka Nagar and Kodambakkam.

The state altered its previous decision to resume liquor sales amid strong opposition to allow retail sale in Chennai. Public interest litigation was brought in the Madras Superior Court against liquor sales throughout the state on the grounds that it would lead to abandonment of social distancing outside of stores. On Tuesday, the state government announced that it would market liquor in all districts except Chennai.
