Actress-turned-Trinamool Congress contestant Koushani Mukherjee sparked controversy Saturday when a video with her alleged comment “Please think before you cast your votes, you have a mother, sister at home” went viral.
Koushani, who had joined the Trinamool Congress two months ago and is in the fray in Krishnagar’s seat, claimed that a part of his comment was taken out of context and put on video by BJP’s IT cell to give him a different meaning.
“I tried to project the fact that Bengal is the safest state for women, unlike Uttar Pradesh, ruled by the BJP, where women were raped in Hathras and their parents were shot for protesting. The BJP IT cell edited the footage for cheap politics, “he added. it said in a statement.
Koushani also posted a video of what she claimed was her original comment on her Facebook page in which she is seen walking in her constituency soliciting votes and telling voters “Think twice before voting for BJP, you have your mother and sisters at home. “
She is also seen saying: “In Didi, Bengal women are safe. Do not vote for BJP if you do not want Bengal to become another Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, ruled by BJP.”
Actor-turned-BJP leader Rupa Bhattacharya attacked Koushani in a post that read: “The statements of the alleged actress-turned-politician like you make us ashamed.”
“An actress must have refined taste … If you think making such an ugly comment will make the Trinamool Congress workers love you, rest assured that they will hate your hypocrisy from the bottom of your heart,” Bhattacharya said.
Trinamool Congressional Minister Sashi Panja said that some of Koushani’s comments remained in the edited video, but not all of the footage. PTI SUS KK KK KK
