‘Just the declared wish of the people’: BJP’s flip-flop in Sreedharan as CM’s face of the party in Kerala

On Friday, the BJP in Kerala made a sea change with the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the assembly elections.

Hours after the party he declared that E Sreedharan, popularly known as ‘Metro Man’, would be candidate for chief minister of the partyThe BJP head of state, K Surendran, wanted to retract the announcement. “What I said was the desire of the party and the people. But I can’t make up my mind. There is no confusion on the subject, ”he said.

However, Surendran added: “There would be a BJP government in Kerala that would be led by Sreedharan from the front.”

On Thursday, while addressing the party’s Vijay Yatra in Thiruvalla, Surendran had stated that Sreedharan he would be the party’s prime minister candidate in the state assembly elections. He wanted the people of Kerala to give a government led by Sreedharan a chance to implement the development projects of the Modi government.

Shortly after Surendran made the statement about the party’s chief minister candidate, the issue was endorsed by the Union Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, V Muraleedharan, who has a considerable interest in the party’s Kerala affairs. Muraleedharan tweeted: “@BJPKeralam will fight #Keralapolls with E Sreedharan as their prime minister candidate … the new Kerala under E Sreedharan will pave the way for efficient and effective government in the state.” Later on Thursday night, the union minister, a native of Kerala, withdrew his tweet.

Party sources said the central leadership was upset by Surendran’s announcement even though the party has not addressed the same issue in other states linked to the polls.

On Friday, Surendran said: “The central leadership of the party would decide (on the candidate for prime minister) after deliberations. What I said was that the party workers and the people want to have the leadership of Sreedharan. Kerala would certainly have a BJP government and people like Sreedharan would lead it from the front, ”he said.
