A 98-year-old man from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh, 79 km from the state capital, Lucknow, was honored by the district administration for being self-reliant and independent at his age. Vijay Pal Singh sells chana or boiled chickpeas on the streets of a Raebareli village.

He was invited to the District Magistrate’s office on Thursday and presented with Rs. 11,000 in cash. The Raebareli District Magistrate Vaibhav Shrivastava also presented him with a cane, a shawl and a certificate. The officer said the old man has a house under a government scheme.
