Strong tremors were felt in Delhi, its surrounding areas and many other parts of northern India, following a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Tajikistan on Friday. #Earthquake started trending almost immediately on Twitter when hundreds of users began sharing their experience. Images on social media show people running out of their homes in panic.
“So far there are no reports of damage in Amritsar or other parts of Punjab after the earthquake. Senior @PunjabPoliceInd officials and the local administration are closely monitoring the situation. Praying for everyone’s safety,” the chief minister tweeted. Punjab, Amarinder Singh.

Since the 2005 earthquake, the tremors in Srinagar have not been strong enough to force me to leave my home. I grabbed a blanket and ran. I didn’t remember picking up my phone and that’s why I couldn’t tweet “earthquake” while the damn ground shook.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Tajikistan, according to the National Center for Seismology of India. The earthquake occurred at 10:31 pm IST at a depth of 74 km from the surface.
