Hyderabad:
A class 10 student in Hyderabad, who stopped attending classes for not paying her school fees, committed suicide on Thursday, police say.
The girl, the daughter of day laborers, was found yesterday hanging in her home. She had refused to go to school, her parents said.
The parents said that they had paid a portion of the 37,000 rupees owed as fees, and that they had told the school that they would pay the rest later this month.
“Despite losing our earnings due to the closure, we managed to pay around 15,000 rupees to the school. We told them that we would pay before the 20th,” said the girl’s father.
He claimed that the school management had pressured his daughter, humiliated her and forced her to call him repeatedly to ask for the money.
“They made my daughter call me 2 or 3 times in the last few days. My daughter didn’t want to go to school yesterday. She told me to tell the teacher that she had gone to the hospital because she didn’t want to confront them. The teachers made her call me. and push to pay, ”he said.
The school authorities reportedly denied the girl entry and reportedly told her that she could not attend classes until the full fee was paid.
“School fees have been charged to my son. We had said we would pay the 20th. I don’t know what kind of humiliation my son was subjected to, he committed suicide,” his mother shouted.
A case has been brought against the school’s leadership, police said.
“We have brought a case against the school administration based on the parents’ complaint and we will be investigating their role,” said Inspector Narsimha Swamy.
“No suicide note has been found and further investigations are underway,” he added.
