New Delhi:
A policeman was attacked with a sword in Delhi in clashes during a farmers’ tractor protest that fell apart on Tuesday.
The farmers were led by Nihangs equipped with swords and kirpans as they charged at police and broke through barricades, Delhi Police said in their First Information Report (FIR) on the clashes.
Delhi police say more than 300 policemen were injured in clashes with protesters who defied the agreements and brought their concentration of tractors to central Delhi on Republic Day.
“The operator of the Central DCP Additional was attacked with a sword at ITO on Tuesday during the violence,” police said, according to the ANI news agency. The incident took place outside the Delhi police headquarters at ITO, a key intersection in Delhi.
“On January 26, 2021, at approximately 8.30 AM, between 6,000 and 7,000 tractors had gathered at the Singhu borders and were due to reach Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar and turn right. Instead of the agreed route , they insisted on going to central Delhi and despite the persuasion of the Delhi police, the farmers led by Nihangs on their horses fully equipped with deadly weapons such as swords, kripans and farces (axes) charged the police and broke several layers of barricades, which were erected between Mukarba Chowk and Transport Nagar. ”, said the police in the FIR.
Among the videos circulating online, one shows a protester armed with a sword chasing policemen.
A special investigation team from the Delhi Police Crime Division is likely to investigate the incident.
