India has already launched a massive coronavirus vaccination campaign under which two vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, are administered to front-line healthcare workers across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide vaccination program on Saturday, urging people to show patience during the COVID-19 immunization campaign, as they have shown so far in the fight against the pandemic.

The Comptroller General of Drugs of India (DCGI) earlier this month approved Oxford’s Covishield COVID-19 vaccine, manufactured by the Serum Institute, and indigenously developed Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for restricted emergency use in the country.

According to the government, the vaccines will first be offered to about one crore of healthcare workers and about two crore of frontline workers, and then to people over 50, followed by people under 50 with associated comorbidities.

So far, a total of 4,54049 beneficiaries have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the country, representing more than double the number of active coronavirus cases, the Union Health Ministry said.
