Serum Institute of India Executive Director Natasha Poonawalla finally had a day to celebrate after months of hard work for her husband Adar’s birthday. Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute today celebrated his 40th birthday with his family, some glimpses shared by his wife Natasha on Instagram.
The “relentless hard work,” Ms Poonawalla refers to in her post, is the manufacture of the Covishield coronavirus vaccine at the Serum Institute over many months.
The couple’s children and other relatives were present at the meeting. Mr. Poonawalla is seen cutting a cake in the photo.

Actor Sonam Kapoor also wished Mr. Poonawalla on his birthday by calling him “the guy who’s about to save the world,” in an Instagram post.
The Covishield vaccine was launched Tuesday from the IBS facility in Pune. 56.5 lakh doses of Covishield, India’s first coronavirus vaccine, have been shipped to various cities including Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Kolkata, Guwahati and Patna.
Adar Poonawalla tweeted that it was an “emotional moment” for the entire SII team after the launch of the first shipment.
The government plans to purchase a total of 5.60 crore doses of the Covishield vaccine by April 2021, at 200 rupees per dose. While Rs 1.10 million doses of the vaccine were purchased on Monday, there is a “commitment” to purchase another Rs 4.50 million doses by April 2021.
India begins on Saturday the first phase of a mass vaccination, considered the largest in the world, with about 30 million people, including three million front-line workers, to be inoculated.
