A Chinese soldier was arrested on Friday on the Indian side of LAC in Ladakh. He was detained by Indian troops, officials said today. The soldier from the People’s Liberation Army (EPL) is being treated in accordance with established procedures and the circumstances in which he crossed the LAC are being investigated, sources said.
“During the early morning of January 8, 21, a Chinese soldier was arrested on the Indian side of LAC, in Ladakh, in the area south of Pangong Tso Lake. The PLA soldier had transgressed through LAC and was detained by Indian troops deployed in this area, “said an official.
“The PLA soldier is being treated in accordance with established procedures and the circumstances under which he crossed the LAC are being investigated. More details are expected,” the official added.
This is the second such case of a Chinese soldier crossing LAC since October last year. That month, a PLA soldier, identified as Wang Ya Long, was captured by Indian forces in the Demchok sector of eastern Ladakh. He was repatriated shortly after by the Indian army.
Troops from both sides have been deployed throughout LAC since friction broke out last year due to the unprecedented mobilization and advanced concentration of Chinese troops.
Tension between India and China in eastern Ladakh peaked in June 2020 in a clash that left 20 Indian soldiers dead and an unspecified number of Chinese casualties. The two countries have moved tens of thousands of troops and weapons to the high-altitude region since March and several rounds of talks have failed to significantly ease tensions.
In December, they agreed to continue working to ensure complete disengagement of troops at all sticking points along LAC in eastern Ladakh as “before.” However, after several rounds of diplomatic and military talks, no progress has been made so far.
