New Delhi:
So far, 90 people in India have contracted the new strain of coronavirus, which was first detected in the UK in September, the Health Ministry said today. Eight of these cases of the mutant strain, which are believed to be more infectious, are new, the data shows.
Across the country, 18,222 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours brought the count to 1,04,31,639; 228 deaths brought the total number of disease-related deaths to 1,50,798. The number of active cases, however, is 2,24,190; more than 1 crore of people have already recovered.
The surge in the number of patients with the new strain comes as India awaits the launch of the vaccine after Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and Bharat Biotech’s Serum Institute of India Covishield were cleared for emergency use by drug regulator DCGI on Last Sunday. The government yesterday carried out the third vaccination test across the country to check readiness. “The third massive nationwide drill held yesterday to ensure the readiness of all preparations and to simulate a smooth and flawless vaccine administration covered 4,895 session sites in 615 districts in 33 states / UT,” said the Ministry of Salud in a statement today.
In the UK, the mutant virus has led to an unprecedented increase in Covid cases. In London, Mayor Sadiq Khan declared a major incident on Friday, saying the British capital was “at a crisis point” and urgent action was required as beds for Covid patients could run out in a few weeks.
Earlier this week, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the tightest restrictions in months to control the spread. He also postponed his visit to India at the end of this month.
In Delhi, massive chaos erupted on Friday after passengers returning from the UK were told they would have to go into an institutional quarantine.
India has “demonstrated an exponential increase in the number of cumulative COVID-19 tests,” the government further emphasized. “It has crossed the total testing milestone of 18 crore (18,02,53,315) today,” the Health Ministry said in the statement.
“The progressive expansion across the country in the testing infrastructure has played a crucial role in the sharp increase in test numbers. With 2,316 testing laboratories in the country, including 1201 government laboratories and 1,115 private laboratories, the testing capacity daily has received a substantial boost, “the statement read. .
