New Delhi:

Kerala today reported six cases of the mutant coronavirus strain that was first confirmed in the UK. All six who tested positive had returned from the UK after December 14, Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja told reporters.

Among those who tested positive are two people from a family in Kozhikode, two others from a family in Alappuzha, and one from Kottayam and one from Kannur.

“A total of 29 samples were sent to a laboratory in Pune. The first 11 were negative for the mutated strain. Today, six were positive for that strain. They are in isolation and in hospital, under treatment. Quarantine was recommended on arrival and their contact lists have been prepared and are even under observation, “said Ms Shailaja.

While other states have reported more than 30 cases of this mutant strain, in Kerala these are the first cases to be reported.

The Health Minister urged people to exercise caution and follow all COVID-19 protocols. “People should be very careful. We can’t keep everything closed for long. But while relaxation is provided, people should venture out only for essential activities. They should not gather or wander without masks and homes only for essential activities. The priority is saving people’s lives, “said Ms. Shailaja.

In Maharashtra, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that eight people who returned from Britain had symptoms of the new strain of coronavirus. “8 UK passengers who returned to Maharashtra were found to have symptoms of the novel coronavirus, including 5 from Mumbai, one each from Pune, Thane and Mira Bhayandar. All are segregated and their contact tracing is ongoing,” Top tweeted. .
