Don’t trust the ‘BJP vaccine’, says Akhilesh Yadav; party strikes back | India News

LUCK: Samajwadi Party Chairman Akhilesh Yadav said Saturday that the Covid-19 vaccine will not be given because he does not trust a vaccine being implemented by the BJP. Yadav’s statement provoked a strong response from the ruling BJP, who called it an “insult” to all doctors and scientists in the country.
“How can I trust the vaccine that will be used for vaccination by the BJP? We cannot get vaccinated with the BJP vaccine,” Akhilesh told reporters in Lucknow. He stated that when he forms the government in the state, everyone will receive free vaccines.
The Samajwadi Party chief was responding to a media inquiry about testing the Covid-19 vaccine across India and whether he and his party workers would get vaccinated.
Targeting the ruling dispensation, Akhilesh said the government is using the pandemic as a tool to restrict and stop events organized by opposition parties.
He claimed that such restrictions were not imposed during any event held by the ruling party.
At a Narendra Modi government dig in the Center, the SP chief said that people who believe the coronavirus can be stopped by “clapping and banging thalis (plates)” are now talking about vaccination.
In reaction to the statement, Uttar Pradesh Chief Deputy Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya joked that Akhilesh did not trust the vaccine and that the people of Uttar Pradesh did not trust the head of the SP.
“The former chief minister of the UP, Shri Akhilesh Yadav ji, by publicly questioning the vaccine has not only insulted the government but also the doctors and scientists of our country who worked day and night for this vaccine,” he said.
Maurya demanded an apology from Akhilesh and said that as a former prime minister, he should be careful when making such statements.
BJP State Chairman Swatantra Dev Singh tweeted: “The BJP vaccine has been effective in controlling corruption and crime, which vaccine are you questioning?”
Akhilesh’s statement also sparked a Twitter storm with several people questioning the Samajwadi Party leader for politicizing the issue.
Later, Akhilesh tried to clarify his comments, tweeting that he had full confidence in doctors and scientists, but did not trust the ruling BJP.
