The leader of Congress and former Union Minister Buta Singh died at the AIIMS in Delhi early on Saturday morning. He was 86 years old. He had been in a coma since October last year after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
Her passing was announced by her son Arvinder Singh Lovely Sidhu on Facebook. “My father, Buta Singh, passed away this morning. May Waheguru bless his soul,” the Hindi post read.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the country by condoning the death of Singh, who was a member of Shiromani Akali Dal before joining Congress in the 1960s.
Shri Buta Singh Ji was a seasoned administrator and an effective voice for the welfare of the poor and oppressed. Saddened by his passing. My condolences to his family and followers.

Tributes also came from President Ram Nath Kovind, Congressional Rahul Gandhi, Ashok Gehlot, Amarinder Singh and Kuldeep Bishnoi, in addition to many others, including Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Born in 1934 in Jalandhar of Punjab, Buta Singh joined the Congress under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru and was close to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, both.
Mr. Singh was first elected to Parliament in 1962. Over the years, he served as Minister of the Interior in the government of Rajiv Gandhi from 1986 to 1989, National Chairman of the Scheduled Caste Commission, Governor of West Bengal and Bihar and Union Minister of Agriculture. , Railways, Commerce and Sports, among other departments.

Singh’s last political assignment was a two-year term as governor of Bihar in 2004, after which he only held organizational positions within Congress.
