In the face of massive agitation from the state’s farmers, Haryana’s Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced on Thursday that he was committed to the continuation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and would withdraw from politics if the regime reaches its end.

“We are committed to the continuation of the MSP (Minimum Support Price) in Haryana. Manohar Lal will abandon politics if someone tries to end the MSP regime,” he said according to the ANI news agency.

Khattar’s comments follow the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the elections to three of the state’s five municipal corporations. Haryana farmers are up in arms against the three controversial farm laws passed by the Center.

Earlier this month, Dushyant Chautala, Haryana’s deputy CM and leader of the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which is in a coalition with the BJP in the state, had made a similar statement. “The national president of our party has already made it clear that the MSP must be guaranteed to farmers. The written proposals delivered by the central government to protesting farmers include a provision for MSP. I will work to secure the MSP for farmers while I am in power. I will resign from my position the day I cannot keep the promise, ”Chautala had said.

On Sunday the mayoral elections of the cities of Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat were held. As the BJP struggled to win in Panchkula, Congress and the Haryana Jan Chetna Party (HJCP) held mayoral positions in Sonipat and Ambala, respectively. It was the first time that direct elections were held for the mayoral positions in the three cities. In 2018, the party had won mayoral elections in Hisar, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak and Yamunanagar.
